A MONSTER PROJECT

For the last three years, I’ve been traveling across the US in pursuit of documenting the history of the American Monster Truck industry.

Growing up in rural Missouri, some of my favorite early memories surround annual trips to Monster Jam at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. I followed the sport passionately throughout my childhood, until ultimately “moving on” during the early 2010s.

Fast forward to 2020: while locked down and working from home, I rediscovered the industry in a state that was unrecognizable from the era in which I grew up. When speaking with people in my everyday life, many struggled to see the sport as anything other than a circus of “big trucks crushing small cars.”

While disheartening, it led to a realization that the modern industry lacks an accessible on ramp for new generations of potential fans to truly connect with the sport’s competitive origins, chart it’s evolution into a global phenomenon, and to hear the stories that brought the industry to where it is today.

With the Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! documentary series, by speaking with pioneers, legends, and the community at large, I hope to be able to provide a definitive record of monster truck history, explore the sport’s evolution into its current form, and emphasize the importance of ongoing efforts to honor those who founded this uniquely American tradition.
